If wishes were horses, we all would ride. These days, everyone and their cousin has a blog, their own website, a place for self-expression, self-aggrandisement, self-promotion, self-explanation. Pictures, biographies, and opinions abound. Alas, if I only had the time to read millions of paragraphs expressing individual views. Somehow I find myself more attracted to the opinions of experts, of those who have a track record and a reputation in the field to which their blog pertains. Perhaps it's because of my experience in research in music history. After all, any yahoo with a computer can offer their opinion as the gospel truth, but who knows if there are facts to back it up? In short, where's the bibliography, which so annoyed me when I was young, and which now, in my later years, reassures me? I live in a world of political and social instability. I live in a state of physical instability: California, where the very ground can shake under one's feet. It would be nice to read or hear some verifiable facts now and then, just so I know there are a few life preservers floating around in this liquid turmoil. So, my humble opinion is, if you must blog, support your ideas with facts; if you must read blogs, make the bloggers prove their point.
